HOW TO TEACH
PROBLEM-SOLVING WHEN YOUR CHILD MAKES A MISTAKE |
|
About Dr. Brody |
1. | Be non-emotional - this is your child's problem, not yours. |
| 2. | Do NOT run interference - your child has earned the consequences from his behavior and will not learn that he has control over his life unless you allow him to deal with those consequences. | |
| 3. | Ask your child how he feels about the situation. | |
| 4. | Ask your child the how, why and what of the situation. | |
| 5. | Ask your child what the consequences of his actions are. | |
| 6. | Ask your child if the price was worth the payoffs (there are usually more than one of each.) | |
| 7. | Ask your child what (if anything) he's going to do different next time (this helps him learn to project probable consequences for future behavior.) | |
| 8. | Empathize and help your child know that we all have the same feelings and similar dilemmas. | |
| 9. | Suggest alternatives, which others have used, which he may not be familiar with. | |
| 10. | Let the child know that you make mistakes and learn from them. |
